I think this is a sphinx moth. It was very dark when I took this photo so it's amazing I got the any part of it! Taken at Tom and Suz's farm in Cecil County Maryland. The long dark red stringy thing coming from its head and then directly vertical is it's proboscis or straw-like tongue that they use to gather nectar.

on June 24, 2007I checked a cool bug/moth website and confirmed your ID - this is a Tobacco Sphinx or Tomato Hornworm, Manduca sexta. There is an image and confirmation about the 4th moth down the page, and another further down. Your shows the wings more clearly, you might send it into the website, which helps identify moths and bugs for people. It might also prove useful for you when you find a bug you can't identify. www.whatsthatbug.com/clearwing_moth.html
